Why do i get sudden sharp shooting pain in my pelvis?

Sudden sharp shooting pain is a classic symptom of pelvic floor muscle spasms.  These can occur in the muscles that are closest to the bladder and patients will sometimes describe it to feel like bladder spasms.  At times it can occur in the muscles closest to the rectum and patients will describe these as rectal spasms.  This is called proctalgia fugax.  The symptoms are common when your muscles are hypertonic and often patients are embarrassed to tell their provider that they are experiencing this type of symptom; patients often live with this type of symptom for years until someone finally asks.  While a careful evaluation is always important to rule out triggers to the development of pelvic floor spasms this symptom is classic and you should always report these symptoms to your provider if you experience them.
