Why do i have pain after sex?

There are 3 different reasons for pain after intercourse.  The most common is pain caused by pelvic floor muscles that are too tight.  It is often reported as an aching cramping discomfort that can go on for hours and sometimes more than a day after intercourse.  Just like doing too many situps muscle pain is often delayed.  Another cause for pain after intercourse is burning, raw or irritative symptoms triggered by the friction of intercourse.  There are many different reasons for this type of symptom such as lichen sclerosis, vaginal atrophy or vulvodynia.  A careful examination will help you and your provider determine the cause.  Finally, pelvic congestion syndrome is a pelvic pain disorder that is often associated with this unique symptom.  It is thought to be characterized by engorgement of the pelvic vessels as a result of intercourse and typically can last for several hours after a sexual encounter.
