Why do I have pain with sex?

There are many causes for pain during or after sex.  A careful history and a very simple and gentle exam will quickly establish a differential diagnosis.  That means that together we will come up with the possible causes.  The most common cause is pelvic floor muscles that are hypertonic and do not relax.  This makes them tender.  The pain can occur just at the opening or deep inside.  The pain can occur during intercourse, but often muscles will be most symptomatic after intercourse.

Some patients experience the pain as a burning raw irritative symptom.  This can be caused by a lack of estrogen, a low-grade vaginal infection but is often the result of a common introital pain disorder called vulvodynia.
